How does Anupam Kher reconcile his earlier statements on awards? "Awards in our country have become a mockery of our system. There is no authenticity left in any one of them. B it films, National or new Padma..." at 6:27 pm on 26th January 2010. "Happy, humbled and honoured to share that I have been awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. Greatest news of my life #Jai Hind." 2:56 pm 25th January 2016. Nice to know that a protest march goes a long way!!!

The worst pick this year would undoubtedly be - former CAG Vinod Rai. His so-called "unearthing" of the telecom scam helped Modi and BJP have windfall gains and ascend to power last year. If he is a man of integrity, which he at least purports to have as a Consutional functionary, he should decline it. This should also set the precedence that no Consutional functionaries should accept any Padma Awards.

How many of these are Dalits? How many of these are those that have not sold memberships to BJP? What communities in India's cities TODAY clean/clear people's toilets, clear dead animals, do professions that any uppercastes would not go near? Do children eat midday meals cooked by the Dalits? Do Dalits get jobs in the food outlets anywhere in India as cooks and waiters? Can Dalits draw water from the common village wells? In Gujarat, can Dalits buy houses where uppercastes and Jains live? Indian society requires a bit of introspection before demanding the removal of reservations for Dalits. Watch out! Dalits are steadily becoming India-wide a super strong political force. And that is going to upset the apple-cart.

Some how, I have this feeling that Padma awards have lost their value. This is not to belittle the achievements of the winners. But some larger patterns undermine the values. (i) these awards are being used for recognizing loyalists of the ruling front / party. There is an element of bias. People are easily able to list others who have been left unrecognized because of the opposite. (ii) we do hear a lot of stories in the grapevine of how aspirants chase the awards and all kinds of influences through undesirable means are being taken to win the awards (iii) awards are tilted towards celebrities and not bringing as many hidden talents. I am not sure if Satyarthi got a Padma award in the past. (iv) a system of awarding the same people with a higher award, as if this is a kind of promotion scheme, has come about. First Padma Shree, after 5 years a Padma Bhushan, after another 5 years, a Padma Vibhushan. There are celebrities who have grievances about not having received their 'promotion'. There should perhaps be just one Padma award, with no gradation. Can we say how one awardee is superior to another?
