A youth belonging to a lower caste allegedly died a custodial death in Jangjir Champa district of Chhattisgarh Sunday. The victim, Satish Kumar Norge, reportedly had an altercation with electricity officials after he went to complain about a faulty transformer.

He was taken to the police station where the officials allegedly beat him to death. Injury marks have been found all over the body of the deceased.

The incident has now taken a political turn. The opposition has alleged that the state government has failed to protect the adivasis. Lower caste Chhattisgarh Janata Congress’s Amit Jogi was also present at the village. Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel has been holding a dharna outside the chief minister Raman Singh’s office.

Leader of opposition TS Singhdeo will be writing to the NHRC and SHRC. SP Ajay Yadav has suspended the Thana Prabhari of Mulmuli police station with immediate effect.

PCC Chief Bhupesh Baghel has been picked up by the police from outside CM Raman Singh’s residence with other Congressmen. One official says the youth had been brought to the thana for allegedly disturbing electricity connection “out of mischief”.

Villagers, however, say that he had only gone to complain about transformer not functioning.
