Only 5 per cent Army veterans facing problems over OROP, says Manohar Parrikar

The comments by Parrikar came against the backdrop of a row over suicide by an ex-serviceman from Haryana over the OROP issue and amid the ongoing war of words between ruling BJP and Opposition parties.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said 95 per cent of retired defence personnel have benefited from the implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme and problems being faced by the remaining 5 per per cent will be resolved in the next two months. The comments by Parrikar came against the backdrop of a row over suicide by an ex-serviceman from Haryana over the OROP issue and amid the ongoing war of words between ruling BJP and Opposition parties, including Congress.

“More than 95 per cent people (ex-servicemen) are benefiting from (enhanced) pension after the implementation of One Rank One Pension. There are only 4-5 per cent who are facing difficulties in getting their pensions (as per OROP). “Most of these are old ex-servicemen, including veterans from 1962 and 1971 wars, whose records are untraceable,” Parrikar told reporters.

“Since their records are old, the Pension Department does not have them. The most important record for pension is the years of service put in by veterans. That is not available. These are old pensioners. In many cases, their families are getting the pension,” the Minister said.

Parrikar said he has given special instructions to officials concerned to get the records within a month and if required, they (beneficiaries) will be asked to file affidavit. Problems being faced by them will be resolved in the next two months, he said, adding there is no discontent among the ex-servicemen over the pension issue.

“I have held meetings with the ex-servicemen associations which have said they are happy with the (OROP) implementation.” Replying to a question, Parrikar said, “Only those ex-servicemen who have joined politics are now acting like politicians.”

I think Parikar meant the 5% brahmins that occupy the top echelons of the defense forces, that he says need to be addressed first. Bagawatji should release the order immediately so that brahmin bloods don't boil.

It is sad that an Ex Serviceman took the extreme step. By his telephonic conversation it appears that he choose to sacrifice himself for the betterment of others. A true solider. Service before self as his family is reduced only to lesser family pension but he clearly said that now he leaves it for his other brothers to carry forward the battle. It detest me with our politicians who lost the real intention of this sacrifice and still playing around with data to justify themselves. And in some cases calling him insane. Alas, some belongs to same community and still did not have the vision to see the truth of this incident. Defense Minister should take positive charge of the repeated cheating of Ex Serviceman by some low ranking bureaucrats as the faith is like a mirror and one crack can never be repaired to bring back the same old reflection. BJP has not lost everything and can restore the morale back with the clean and quick governance which they claim. Why it is only Military men who have to run from Pillars to post over decades, whereas civilians get their anomalies quickly resolved. BJP, prove yourself that you bother for the soldiers and not like previous Govts. entangle them from one committee to another committee and from promise to another promise. A labourer must be paid his dues before his sweat dries, and a Soldier must be paid before flowing blood of his wounds dries. This is the only test of nationalism. Otherwise we are only fooling each other or being fooled by Bureaucracy if we consider politicians are really true nationalist.
