ONE PERSON was killed and about a dozen injured in the first phase of panchayat polls in Bihar on Sunday.
Overall, 55 per cent voting was recorded for the posts of 124 zila parishad members, 1,247 panchayat samiti members, 906 mukhiyas and sarpanches each and 1,237 gram panchayat and kachahari panch members each in 60 blocks across 38 districts.
Sunil Kumar, a villager in Daulatpura under Narhat panchayat of Nawada district, succumbed to his injuries after being hit by a bullet during firing at a polling booth. Police said his uncle Dhanjay Singh is a mukhiya candidate. They said two persons, including Kumar, were injured when two groups opened fire at each other.
Violent incidents were also reported from about a dozen other booths.
