The Una Dalit Atyachar Ladat Samiti formed to fight for the rights of the Dalits in the state is holding a Dalit ‘mahasammelan’ of various Dalit organisations and Dalit rights groups outside the office of Ahmedabad district collector on July 31 to discuss ‘anti-Dalit’’ policies of the state government and prepare a list of their demands to be handed over to the government.
Addressing mediapersons Tuesday, Samiti convener Jignesh Mewani said that while the state government stopped allotment of government wasteland to Dalits after 2007, it also did nothing to get the lands allotted earlier to Dalit vacated from encroachers belonging to the upper-castes and hand over its possession to the Dalit allottees.
Stating that they were prepared for a long battle with the government for the rights of the Dalits in the state, Mewani said that Samiti demanded externment of all the accused of the Una incidents from their villages for some time or book them under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act so that they did not get bail immediately.
He also demanded arrest of all those visible in the video clips when the Dalits youths were being flogged publicly in Una and registration of criminal cases against them. He also wanted registration of criminal cases against all those involved in the Una conspiracy as also against the policemen under provisions of the Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes ( Prevention of Atrocity) Act.
Mewani also demanded withdrawal of cases registered against Dalit youths having taken part in the agitation to demand justice for the Una flogging victims.
He also demanded to regularise all temporary/contract safai workers in municipalities and mahanagarpalikas and give them salaries as per sixth pay panel recommendations.
Stating that Dalits from hundreds of villages in the state had migrated to towns and cities because of atrocities at the hands of upper-castes, he wanted the government to rehabilitate all of them by constructing separate residential colonies for them in Satellite, Navrangpura, Naranpura and Bopal areas in Ahmedabad under ‘smart city’ project of the state government.
