A Maoist carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on his head and allegedly involved in a number of crimes, including murder, on Friday surrendered before the police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Rama Madkami alias Rahul from Kalimela area in the Maoist-affected district, surrendered along with a pistol and some ammunition before Malkangiri superintendent of police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra in Malkangiri, police said.
Watch what else is making news:
Odisha government had declared the Rs one lakh reward for the head of Madkami, who was an active member of Andhra Pradesh-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of the outlawed CPI(Maoist) organisation since 2010. He is alleged to have been involved in a couple of killings and blasts, police said.
Madkami’s surrender is seen as a major setback for Maoists, particularly after the gunning down of at least 28 ultras by security forces in Panasput forest of the district last month, police said.
