Odisha Police on Friday appealed to Maoist leader Ramakrishna alias RK to surrender and avail of better treatment for injuries sustained during an encounter on October 24. “We call upon Maoist leader RK to surrender and get better treatment. He was injured in the leg during exchange of fire between the police and Maoists at Panasput grampanchayat of the cut-off area,” said Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mahapatra. RK’s son Munna alias Shivaji was killed in that encounter.
Police officials said that RK has been undergoing treatment near Ramaguda village near the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border. He has been badly injured and is unable to move out of the area due to regular combing operations by police, they said. The bullet reportedly hit a bone in RK’s leg and officials suspect it may lead to gangrene if not operated quickly.
“The gravity of the injury can be gauged from the fact that RK is not able to walk even a month after the encounter,” said a source.
That RK was injured was confirmed early this month after Maoist Dhanamati Bhaja surrendered before Odisha Police. The details regarding the injury came to the fore after Rama Madkami alias Rahul from Kalimela area surrendered before the SP on Friday. Rama Madkami’s father Wagah Madkami alias Rameh works in the inner security ring of RK. Rama had been working for Malkangiri-Visakhapatnam-Koraput Border Division of the CPI (Maoist) from 2010 and carried a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on his head.
Sources said there was resentment in the rebel ranks over the way Odia tribal cadres were treated. Madkami told the police that while local cadres injured in the encounter were left to fend for themselves, leaders like RK were being given special care.
Both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh Police have alerted all the hospitals about RK. Therefore, the top Maoist leader is unable to seek better treatment for his injury. He is being treated locally, officials said.
