NGO petitions delaying construction of Mandovi Bridge: Goa CM Laxmikant Parsekar

In the midst of taking stock on the condition of the Portuguese bridges across the state, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar names state-based NGO for blockading construction of bridges by approaching National Green Tribunal (NGT). According to Parsekar, the progress at the under-construction New Mandovi bridge has been delayed due to NGO

According to Public works department the state has atleast three bridges constructed during the Portuguese era at Bicholim, Savarde and Quepem, besides smaller structures across streams. “Old bridges are regularly audited, and our PWD department is looking into the same. Besides, there are old buildings that are over 50-years old – even those need to properly maintained. Its life can deteriorate,” Parsekar said.

Meanwhile replying to a question at the assembly on the status of ongoing construction at the third Mandovi bridge, which links the state capital to Porvorim and to the NH66 (leading to Mumbai) , the CM said that as of July it was completed by 40 percent. “The stipulated date of completion of the project including landing is January 26, 2017. However, due to petition filed by the Goa Foundation before National Green Tribunal at Pune Bench, there has been delay in further completion of the project,” he said.

Earlier, a Panaji MLA had also taken strong exception to repeated instances of some NGO’s stalling public projects by approaching courts. He had demanded that such organization must be investigated with accountability and cost fixed for the loss faced by the public due to the delay.
