NDFB cadre on way to Myanmar held with cash

The police have arrested at least a dozen fresh recruits of the NDFB(S) who were trying to sneak out to Myanmar in the past couple of months.

The police in Chirang district in the wee hours of Saturday have arrested an NDFB(S) cadre and has recovered a huge amount of cash from him. He had collected the hefty sum of money through extortion and was taking the cash to Dimapur in Nagaland to hand it over to higher-ups of the outfit in Dimapur. The NDFB(S) militant, identified as Derhasat Basumatary (22), admitted that he was directed by the top leaders of the outfit, which had asked him to collect money through extortion from different districts of Assam and personally carry it to Dimapur, to finally hand it over to the outfit’s top leader, currently holed up in Myanmar.

Basumatary would have also crossed over to Myanmar and join a training camp, recently organized by the NDFB(S) Chief, Songbijit ,across the international boundary, Chirang SP Shankar Brata Rai Medhi said. About 120 new recruits of the NDFB(S) are assumed to be undergoing training inside Myanmar, earlier reports had said.
