Shiv Sena’s success in UP: Star Nawazuddin Siddiqui is forced out of Ram Leela

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was made to face with Shiv Sena’s far-right ire when he agreed to perform in his home town’s Ram Leela scheduled for Thursday. In Muzaffarnagar’s Budhana tehsil, the Shiv Sena district head Mukesh Sharma claims he had approached police to ask the committee to drop Nawazuddin from the show, after a message circulated on WhatsApp informed everyone of the actor’s inclusion. Though the Sena evoked tradition and claimed that no Muslims have been part of Ram Leela productions in the city for over 50 years, the cast out-rightly denied it saying that several Muslims have been part of the show. Siddiqui refused to comment on Shiv Sena’s objection to his performance. (read more here)

After Kaziranga eviction, the question: Where next?

As the Assam Chief Minister vowed to make “make all forest areas free of encroachment” Thursday, those evicted from Kaziranga on September 19 still wait to be legally rehabilitated. Though they assert that they are Indian nationals, with the persistent issue of Bangladeshis infiltrating the state has made things worse for them. The team supervising eviction has said dismissed allegations of differentiating between suspected illegal migrant and Indian citizens saying, “a large number of indigenous people too … have encroached upon several reserved forests.” On Wednesday, the BJP’s executive meeting hailed the eviction drive even as the Opposition registered its protests. Judicial probe missed: Rohith Vemula took no SC benefits, mother’s parent confirmed Dalit identity

A judicial probe by a one-man committee into the suicide of Hyderabad University scholar Rohith Vemula had claimed to reveal that his mother “faked” the Dalit status calling the claim that her foster parents had told her that her biological parents were SC was “improbable and unbelievable”. But, in an interview with The Sunday Express in February, days before her death, Radhika’s foster mother, Anjani Devi, had given enough indication that her daughter knew of her Dalit identity. Amid fewer child deaths worldwide, high of 1.3 milion is in India

Even as the the number of deaths of children below 5 years have come down worldwide in the past 25 years, India, with its 1.3 million deaths, has the highest numbers, according to a new study. The number of stillbirths in India was estimated at 0.61 million.  Of 195 countries studied, 122 countries have met the Sustainable Development Goal target to reduce the number of women dying from pregnancy-related causes to less than 70 for every 100,000 live births by 2030. Bangladesh has improved faster than expected while India has shown a slower pace in reduction of such deaths.
