Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh Thursday said that Navjot Singh Sidhu would campaign for the party in the upcoming state assembly elections. “Sidhu is with us, his wife is with us. He does not want to fight from any seat but will campaign with us,” Singh told news agency ANI.
On Wednesday, Singh announced that Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu and former Akali MLA Pargat Singh will join the party on November 28. Congress sources told The Indian Express that Sidhu might join the party once the code of conduct kicked in. There were reports earlier that he could be offered a Lok Sabha ticket from Amritsar or a cabinet position, if Congress comes into power.
Sidhu’s Awaaz-e-Punjab disintegrated with the Bains brothers joining the Aam Aadmi Party. Interestingly, Amarinder previously called the Sidhus an “undisciplined couple” and their outfit a “tonga party”. Sidhu and Pargat too had, in a joint statement issued a few days ago, accused Amarinder of having a “nexus” with the Badals and said they could join Congress only when Amarinder was not at the helm of affairs.
