BJP MLA from Amritsar (East) constituency, Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday resigned from the party. The resignation has been accepted by the party. The wife of Navjot Singh Sidhu, who recently flouted his own political front Awaaz-e-Punjab, was not seen at BJP events since her husband resigned from Rajya Sabha in July.
The resignation comes weeks of speculation over the status of the BJP MLA. Party leaders had told the Indian Express that they had stopped inviting Navjot to functions as her resignation was just a matter of time. The latter claimed she had been skipping them on her own. There were intense rumours that the couple would join the Aam Aadmi Party but talks broke down reportedly over the question of the chief ministerial-candidate. Sidhu eventually kick-started his own political front and vowed to defeat the Akalis, Congress and the AAP.
Recently, the BJP district leadership had inaugurated development projects at Valla village in Sidhu’s constituency in her absence. She was also seen not in the meetings of the BJP unit being held to revamp the party structure in her constituency.
Reacting to the boycott call, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said, “Who are they to not invite me? I have stopped going to party functions on my own. I have my own reasons to not resign from the party. But it is sure I will resign soon.”
The last official function of the BJP that Navjot Kaur Sidhu attended after Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned from Rajya Sabha on July 18 was the party’s ‘Tiranga Yatra’.
