Amid protests by BJP and several Hindu outfits over the murder of Hindu Munnani leader C Sasikumar in Coimbatore last week, the probe into the case was Wednesday transferred to the CB-CID branch of Tamil Nadu police.
DGP T K Rajendran asked the Coimbatore SP to hand over the case diary and other documents to the CB-CID. Sources said the decision came from the highest levels of the state government after the BJP escalated the issue.
According to a senior official, multiple teams of state police were probing the case, but had not made a headway. He said there were no witnesses to the murder, which was reportedly executed by four men on bikes.
Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, who visited Sasikumar’s family Monday, said that since Sasikumar was murdered a day after Uri attack, it should be probed if Pakistani terrorists had a role in the crime. He said police protection to Sasikumar was withdrawn 15 days before the murder. “It is high time that police ensures the safety of Hindu leaders,” he told reporters.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer, who was part of the state police’s probe, ruled out the BJP leaders’ claim that Muslim terrorists were behind the murder.
“Such statements will only politicise the situation as Coimbatore has a history of communal violence,” he said.
