Three women constables from the Mumbai Police’s Local Arms Division are under the scanner after a 25-year-old undertrial, who had been taken to the JJ Hospital in Byculla, fled from the hospital.

The police have launched a lookout for the undertrial, Zubaida Khatun. According to information, Zubaida had been lodged in the Byculla women’s prison since 2012 after being arrested in connection with a kidnapping case at Shivaji Nagar.

The three constables had reportedly accompanied Zubaida to the hospital after her three-year-old daughter, who stayed with the accused in the jail, complained of illness. “Khatun managed to escape and fled from the hospital. A case was registered at JJ hospital and our investigation is under way,” said zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Manoj Sharma.

The JJ Marg police have registered a case under Section 224 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension. While there were reports that the constables had been placed under suspension pending inquiry, these could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing this report. All attempts to contact senior Mumbai Police officials for a confirmation regarding the development remained unsuccessful.
