A school teacher has been arrested for alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident in which two children sustained serious injuries Saturday. Of the two, six-year-old Jiya Kotak, a Thane resident, is still in critical condition at the Jupiter hospital. Parth Kotak (8) is out of danger, hospital authorities said.
The incident was captured on a CCTV camera at a nearby jewellery shop, which shows a WagorR car hitting two children around 3 pm in the Navpada area of Thane.

According to police, Jiya and Parth are cousins who were out with Jiya’s mother in the afternoon. She was taking them back home in an autorickshaw. In the footage, as the two children get out of the autorickshaw near Damania Estate and cross the road, the car, which is taking a right turn, hits them.
The footage further shows the car driver then speeding away from the spot even as the security guards and others present request him to stop. Eventually, they manage to stop the car, and its driver is identified as Dilip Gunjal, who was going to the same society where the children live.
Gunjal was taken to the Navpada police station, where he was charged and arrested.
The children have suffered fractures, head injuries and developed internal bleeding.
According to police, Gunjal said that he pressed the accelerator instead of the break and hence lost control of the car, leading to the accident.
