Former home secretary Madhukar Gupta, who had led a delegation of Home Ministry officers to Islamabad for talks a day before the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, has rejected the charges of enjoying Pakistan’s hospitality in Murree, a hill station close to Islamabad.

Gupta told ANI he had no idea why some reports were suggesting that the delegation was holidaying in Murree. “It is inaccurate that there was no signal in Murree. I got a call from India, who informed me about the attacks and told me to switch on the television,” said Gupta.

Gupta said when he came to know about the attacks in Mumbai, the delegation contacted the senior leadership in India. “As soon as we saw the terror strike, we spoke to all concerned persons, who were supposed to be spoken. Nobody knew that 26/11 would happen,” he added.

The former home secretary further said the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai clearly depicted duplicitous role of Pakistan, adding it was not for the first time that such incidents had happened. He reiterated that he was in constant touch with people back in India when the attacks took place.

“I was in touch with everyone when the disaster struck; what are we trying to prove going into speculation eight years later? I don’t know what purpose it will serve to ask eight years later if we were deliberately sent to Murree,” he asked. He further asked as to how the things could have changed by his physical presence.

“All kind of things were said, like NSG’s late arrival but how would that have changed with my physical presence?” he added.

Fourth, always intimidate Pak militarily around meetings. Fifth, disregard the peaceniks like Kulkarni, Aiyar, Khursheed, Nayar etc. Sixth, talks with Pak will not yield anything. Just go through the motions, and never allow talks on Kashmir , stopping at 26/11 and Pathankot at the first available opportunity ...

Second , any delegation to Pak should not change any plans, whatever be the arguments. Third, there will be some plans by military-terrorist network around meetings, so never confirm plans in advance .

Bombay was burning and the Indian home secretary was asked over phone to watch T.V. He should have rushed back.

Condemning the hosts after enjoying their hospitality is immoral(!). Hence the former home secy.refutes charges on stan.(?)

Even an I d i o t would understand that we were duped, not only by stan, but also by our top bureaucracy and leadership. The stanis had known us very well and our intelligence failed to know their designs. If not for the five star hospitality, will our delegation would go anywhere, as guided by the s. Would they have visited a slum, if they had been taken to/ Whether it is eight years or eighty years, the revelation is of value and has once again proved that we (represented by our spineless leadership) are dumb and hard core fools...

He may have received a call about the attack but he appears not to have rushed back and instead gone on to meet the Interior Minister. Clearly misguided priorities of an official in such a sensitive post. In today's India it is extremely important that these details come into the public domain. I find it unusual that he questions the need for his physical presence. Was he planning to monitor the situation along with the hosts stan as though they were watching a cricket match. The comment does not say much about him even eight years later. What a response.
