Monsoon finally arrives in drought-hit Maharashtra, 90% of state receiving rains: MeT Dept

Monsoon has finally hit the drought-hit state of Maharashtra, the Mumbai MeT department has confirmed, saying 90% of the state is receiving rainfall.

After a delay of about 10 days, Monsoon has finally arrived in drought-hit Marathwada as well as a major part of Maharashtra, the Mumbai MeT department has confirmed.

“Monsoon has arrived in many parts of Maharashtra on Sunday, it’s active in 90 per cent of Maharashtra,” ANI quoted an official of the Mumbai MeT department as saying.

“There has been a delay of more than a week for the onset of southwest monsoon in the state as the usual date is June 10. This time, the onset has taken place from the eastern parts of Vidarbha and is yet to cover the entire state,” said Sunita Devi, director, weather, central IMD, Pune, last week.

Data shows that in recent years, 2007 marked the entry of southwest monsoon from the western and eastern sides, while in the other years, it has been from the west. This year, however, it has been from the east – Vidarbha.
