Bihar government moves Supreme Court against Shahabuddin’s bail

The Nitish Kumar government has been under pressure to send Shahabuddin back to jail under Crime Control Act.

The Bihar government on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of RJD strongman Mohammed Shahbuddin’s bail. Shahabuddin was released from Siwan Central Jail after the Patna High Court granted him bail. The RJD leader is facing multiple charges in several cases.

Noted lawyer Prashant Bhushan also filed a PIL today against Shahabuddin’s release. The Nitish Kumar government has been under pressure to send Shahabuddin back to jail under Crime Control Act. Shahabuddin courted controversy soon after his release, when he was quoted saying that Nitish Kumar was a “chief minister of circumstances”.

An embarrassed JD(U) leadership was forced to clarify that RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav do not share Shahabuddin’s view on Nitish. Party sources said that the chief minister has also expressed displease at Shahabuddin’s comments.

With the controversy refusing to die down, Shahabuddin landed in another controversy when he was spotted with wanted shooter Mohammed Kaif, who is accused of murdering Siwan journalist Ranjan Rajdev. A CBI probe was initiated after Ranjan’s wife Aisha moved the Supreme Court regarding the same.
