Nabha Jailbreak: Patiala cops arrest 1 for sheltering armed suspect

The police said Gurpreet’s role came to light during the interrogation of Palwinder Singh Pinda, who is accused of masterminding the escape.

THE PATIALA police Wednesday arrested one person, Gurpreet Singh, who had allegedly provided shelter to one of the armed persons who helped six prisoners escape Nabha jail on Sunday.

Police recovered a Maruti Swift Dzire car, a 9-mm pistol and some live cartridges from him. This is the sixth arrest in the case since the jailbreak on November 27.

Among the five others arrested are one of the escaped prisoners, Khalistan Liberation Force chief Parminder Singh Mintoo, one attacker, Palwinder Singh Pamma and three others who colluded in the escape – Assistant jail superintendent Bhim Singh, head warden Jagmeet Singh and a sweet shop owner Tejinder Sharma Gurpreet, according to the police, those who participated in freeing the prisoners met at Gurpreet’s home in Moga where they finalised the plan. According to the officials of Patiala police, Gurpreet, who hails from Mangewala village in Moga district, was planning to escape to Uttar Pradesh when police teams led by SP (Investigation) Patiala and Mohali arrested him in Pattran area..

The police said Gurpreet’s role came to light during the interrogation of Palwinder Singh Pinda, who is accused of masterminding the escape. The police said Gurpreet arranged funds for the escape.

The car recovered from Gurpreet was snatched from Mohali a few months ago, the police said. He was using the car with fake number plates. He is to be produced in court on Thursday. Five of the six prisoners who escaped, Vicky Gounder, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, Kulpreet Singh alias Neeta Deol and Amanpreet Singh, are still at large.
