Maneka Gandhi’s Twitter handle on Friday featured a series of posts on how women in government institutions could approach her in case their complaints of sexual harassment are not resolved. Ministry insiders say the trigger for the tweets was three specific cases that a complainant brought to the notice of the WCD minister. These relate to alleged sexual harassment in the ministries of Sports and Railways. In two of these cases, the matter is pending before the internal complaints cell for two years, while in the third the cell has dismissed the complaint despite witnesses deposing in favour of the victim. Maneka has called for a meeting of the cell heads of some ministries next week to sensitise them on the need to expeditiously resolve such complaints.
Indications that NIA chief Sharad Kumar will get another one-year contract as its D-G have left the Congress fuming. His one-year contract is set to end on October 31. At the AICC press conference on Friday, Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said the BJP and RSS do not believe in rule of law, as the CrPC says that a police officer can never be on contract, he is a government employee. The government and PM Narendra Modi, he alleged, want someone in the NIA “who keeps giving clean chit to so many of his friends and colleagues in various cases which are pending”.
