With the arrest of 24-year-old man for allegedly withdrawing money fraudulently in the garb of extending help to ATM card holders, the city police on Sunday claimed to have solved seven such cases of fraud. Accused Nikhil Thakur, a resident of Sector 45 in Chandigarh, used to stand in the ATM kiosk beforehand with an intention to target bank customers. Whenever a customer tried to carry out transaction like withdrawal or depositing cash, the ATM would not work and he would offer his help to the customer in completing their transactions successfully, police said.
In this process, Nikhil used to see the password of the ATM card and exchange their genuine card fraudulently with some other card. He would then withdraw the amount from the cash dispensing machine by using the victim’s card, police said.
Complainant Mandeep Kumar, who is employed with Income Tax department, had accused Nikhil of withdrawing money illegally when he had gone to deposit Rs 9,000 at an ATM in Sector 17 here on October 17.
With the arrest of accused, seven ATM fraud cases had been solved and complaints in this regard had been registered at several police stations, police said.
