‘Make in India’ cannot succeed if ‘Skill India’ doesn’t: Chidambaram

"So, if you want to become an industrial economy, you cannot say this is what I produce and therefore, you consume it. Nobody will consume it today," the former Union finance minister said.

P Chidambaram, Make in India, Skill India,  Chidambaram make in India,  Chidambaram skill India, news, latest news, India news, national news If China can make firecrackers which are cheaper and safer than your crackers, Chinese crackers will come to India…that is inevitable,” the former Union finance minister said.

Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram on Saturday said the Centre’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ initiative cannot succeed if ‘Skill India’ does not succeed. ‘Skill India’ will, in turn, triumph only when several other parameters, including those related to education and research, were developed “on par with world standards”, he added. Asked if India was jumping into a service sector-led economy, Chidambaram said that was “inevitable”.

Watch what else is making news:

“That is inevitable. If China can make firecrackers which are cheaper and safer than your crackers, Chinese crackers will come to India…that is inevitable,” he said. Answering questions from IIT-Madras students after delivering a lecture on economic reforms in India, the Congress leader said, “Unless you develop a competitive edge in production, you cannot outcompete the other producers.”

“Why are we becoming a service economy more than an industrial economy? It is because we have acquired a competitive edge in providing services. Therefore, Make in India will succeed only if Skill India succeeds and Skill India will succeed only when your educational standards meet the world’s standards.

“So, if you want to become an industrial economy, you cannot say this is what I produce and therefore, you consume it. Nobody will consume it today,” he added. Chidambaram said the country has to produce goods which are “equal to the world’s goods”.

“Because we produce services which are equal to or better than the world’s services…our economy is fast becoming a service economy,” he said, adding that this can be reversed “only when you invest in education, especially technical education, research, development, skills in Indian workers and then making in India and for the world”.

“We seem to be going the wrong way. You start with ‘Make in India’. What can you make in India? Unless you are able to compete with what is made in China, Korea, Finland or wherever. You have to make in India what is equal to or better than what is made in the rest of the world,” Chidambaram said.

In August, the former Union finance minister had described ‘Make in India’ as an “event management initiative” while speaking to students in Bengaluru.

Why do Opposition leaders think Make in India is an immediate implementable idea. Korea and china took 30 years to reach their excellence level, We start with contract manufacturing and then develop skills for next level. It is so easy to run down great ideas.lt;br/gt;Make in India is a long term policy, and the government is putting all jigsaw pieces in place

For Make in India to succeed there should be no special quotas for BC/OBC/ Dalits etc,lt;br/gt;The most educated, capable and motivated people need to work in places where there is capital, innovation, quality and affordability in products produced. Indian politics survives on dividing the people and then clifying them into various pigeon s.lt;br/gt;Chidambaram is right, I wish he and his Congress buddies had an iota of shame after stealing so much wealth for their foreign friends.

Who is responsible for this? They ensured that we depend on foreign countries for minor things . The MAIN REASON FOR THIS IS THE CONGRESS WANTED EVERY THING TO BE IMPORTED SO THAT THEY CAN MAKE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES. ALL THE FOREIGN IMPORTS IRRESPECTIVE WHETHER IT IS DEF OR CINNECTED TO TEL COM ETC ETC THE BLACK MONEY GENERATED WERE SIPHONED AND SENT IT TO SWISS BANK.. CONGRESS CULTURE. IF THAT IS PATRIOTISM GOD SAVE INDIA. Jai Hind.

To tell the truth "Make in India" is only a sloganization of what was always happening since 1947 . The slogan itself has no new concept that hasn't been used previously. Right from 1947, with a series of technology transfer agreements with overseas firms, we started making turbines, boilers, aircraft, fertilizers , radars , steel, cement, heavy machines, tractors , cars, textiles etc etc. Maybe not much for export , but it was solid manufacturing nevertheless. If we really want to make things for the rest of the world, we can't keep coining slogans. We'll have to make world cl infrastructure and simplify procedures and bureaucracy to the bone. Till we do that, no sloganeering please.

Chidambaram seems to come up with lots of criticism of Modi government why their schemes or programs will fail and how they can be successful. This article is one of them. lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;Question I have for him is that he was a minister with significant responsibility and power for may years. Why did he not come out with programs to uplift India instead of always looking for faults in what present government is doing. He should come with constructive suggestions instead of knocking them down.lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;When will India learn that country will never advance if you keep pulling others donw all the time.
