Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar united the BJP and Opposition Congress in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly Friday with the legislators calling tourists who visit Port Blair “patriots” and requesting the state government to share the tour cost.

The freedom fighter was kept in Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ Cellular Jail for a long time. While participating in a debate on a non-government resolution moved by BJP’s Indore MLA Usha Thakur, the Congress and BJP legislators spoke in one voice.

Thakur eventually withdrew the resolution but began by saying that she was doing so with a heavy heart after MoS for Culture and Tourism Surendra Patwa said the government did not have any plan to declare one particular place as “rashtra teertha”. But state Finance Minister Jayant Malaiya announced that he would include Port Blair in the list of places covered under the state’s pilgrimage scheme.
