The Special Task Force of Kolkata Police on Monday conducted raids at the residence of a suspected ISI agent in the neighbouring Howrah district and seized numerous fake passports.
According to a highly placed source in the Kolkata Police, the raid was conducted at Mohammed Illias’s Tikiapara home in the wee hours on Monday from where several fake passports were seized following the detention of his brother Mohammed Farookh.
Illiash’s name popped up during a grilling session of Sheikh Badal, a passport agent arrested last week for helping a suspected ISI-spy Mohammad Ejaz alias Mohammad Kalam held in Uttar Pradesh in managing a fake voter card. Illias, along with his wife, absconded to Germany earlier this month, the officer said.
“We have detained his brother and are questioning him to know what actually Illias was upto. We are examining Illias’s laptop and other documents seized from his residence,” he said. Illias, in his mid-40s, was an agent at the Bankshall court for a long time and has been into producing fake passports, he said.
“These fake passports were sent to Pakistan and were later used by persons to cross-border to get into India,” the senior officer told reporters. Asked whether Farookh would be arrested, he said, “We are grilling him and trying to get the information and find out what was his role… After that we will take a call.”
On Monday, Lalit Das, a small time trader hailing from Assam was arrested from Siliguri on the suspicion of having alleged links with Assam militants and possibly Islamic State.
Last month the STF had arrested a contract labourer of the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited Irshad Ansari (51) his son Asfaq Ansari (23) and relative Mohammed Jahangir for their alleged links to the Pakistan’s ISI. Earlier, the STF had held brother duo Akhtar Khan and Jaffar Khan for their alleged links with the ISI.
