Kolkata: 2 held for trying to extort Rs 5 lakh from company

According to sources, a complaint was filed by the management of a company called ‘CG Construction’, accusing the two of demanding Rs 5 lakh so the company can “carry on with its work smoothly”.

Two people were arrested by Bidhannagar Police from Gariahat on Saturday for trying to extort Rs 5 lakh from a construction firm. Police sources said they suspected the two to be close aides of Dampi Mandal, TMC councillor of ward no. 4 of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

The accused have been identified as Raju Pal and Chotka. They were arrested under sections 447 (criminal trespass), 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion), 389 (putting person in fear of accusation of offence), 34 (common intention), police said. According to sources, a complaint was filed by the management of a company called ‘CG Construction’, accusing the two of demanding Rs 5 lakh so the company can “carry on with its work smoothly”. Police said they had been tracking the accused for a long time. They were apprehended when they had gone to meet an acquaintance in a three-star hotel in Gariahat.
