To tackle the stray dog menace in Kerala, the CPI(M)-led LDF government today said it would take steps to cull violent street dogs by injecting “special medicines”. Local Administration Minister KT Jaleel said his department’s secretary has been authorised to issue orders to civic bodies for culling of violent street dogs by injecting “special medicines”.

Steps in this regard would be taken on the basis of veterinarians’ certificate. No case would be registered for killing dogs in this manner, Jaleel said. Civic bodies could use the plan fund for the purpose if they did not have enough resources, Jaleel said at a meet-the-press programme here.

He admitted that a main reason for increase in the number of street dogs was the lack of proper disposal of civic waste. The government would also consider a proposal to renew licences of hotels only if they set up waste management facilities, he said.

“We have to face the issue at any cost as the attacks of violent canines have increased in the state many folds,” he said. The government would also implement various other programmes, including sterilisation and Animal birth control measure, to check the growth of street dogs, he added.

At a high-level meeting held on Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had directed officials to take urgent steps to check the street dog menace. The issue became a talking point in the state following the death of a 65-year-old woman after being attacked by a pack of dogs at coastal hamlet Pullivilla near here two days ago.

According to a report submitted in the Supreme Court recently in a connected case, it was stated that more than one lakh people in Kerala have been bitten by dogs in 2015-16. The report also said there were about 2.5 lakh street dogs in the state.

How about killing violent people who disrupt peace in India through: rape murder theft and other forms of inhuman behaviour lt;br/gt;As far as potion is concerned we almost lead what are we doing about that are we taking any strict measures on that front ?lt;br/gt;There are better ways to control stray potion lt;br/gt;There are probably reasons why the dogs have become violent they're scared and they're just defending thenselves it may have also happened that we humans have a tendency to poke them irritate then instigate them to bite us I understand the boys pain loosing him mother but we don't know what must have happened really whether someone else are her and dogs were found around her at that time do we have evidence of the dog eating the woman ? Pls do share it ... Previously Kerala had taken such measurement and poisoned many dogs besides dogs there are other aspects that could be affecting tourism by killing all of them isn't the solution

Street dogs are attacking innocent people those who are walking on road, even those who are sleeping their own home, many died and many injured, this is today’s problem need immediate solution.lt;br/gt;Menaka hi must know giving vaccination and preventing cohabitation thus stopping reproduction, and reducing numbers of street dogs, this will take years, and the same time this cruel dogs those got injection and lost reproduction ability, is alive and they still have the cruel nature and attack people till their death. Giving injection and wasting will not solve problem, they are cruel and mad dogs. lt;br/gt;Only one solution is that Menaka hi has to give shelter, and give food to those cruel animals till death by spending her own money.lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;She must know there are people who keep dogs at home and even allow them to sleep in bed. Killing the street dog, is because they are cruel and become mad, they attack kill and eat innocent people. lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;I really think why she has such love only for Dogs, why she is not bothered about killing of sheep and other animals like bull ? People are taking advantages when they are healthy and when they are old the same people kill them and eat, why she is not having sympathy for those animals? Why she can’t make a law for preventing this merciless killing of those innocent animals?

Why do we have stray dogs in India? Their potion will NOT stop unless they are removed from the streets. I don't understand why do we let them grow their potion and then begin taking an action. Why not cull them all and get rid of this menace? What is the Indian government waiting for? Swachh Bharat this and swachh Bharat that. I'm sure all these stray dogs, cats and cows are making India really swachh. Cow, we call her our mother and yet I see stray cows everyday here in Punjab. What are we waiting for?
