The RSS worker, who was hacked to death in Kannur by unidentified assailants Saturday, was involved in several political clashes, police said Sunday. Recently, he had also been caught in connection with a theft case, they added.

Police identified the victim as Mavila Vineesh, 25, a native of Thillankery near Iritty in Kannur district. His body was found hours after a country-made bomb was hurled at the car of a CPM activist in Kannur.

Kannur’s Iritty had been tense for over a week following clashes between CPM and BJP workers over conducting Janmashtami celebrations. On Saturday night, a bomb was hurled at DYFI worker, Jijesh (28), when he was travelling in a car. Jijesh was allegedly part of a gang which had attacked a local RSS leader, Sujesh, at Muzhappilangad last week.

Later, police found Vineesh lying in a pool of blood, half a kilometre from the place where the DYFI worker was attacked. Vineesh had sustained injuries to his leg and died while being taken to hospital.
