A 90-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted at knifepoint by her 63-year-old neighbour in Kerala’s Kollam district. The woman, who lives alone in her dilapidated house, is suffering from brain tumour.

The alleged incident took place on the night of September 13. Following media reports, police lodged a case under sections 354 (outraging the modesty) and 377 (unnatural sex) of IPC Wednesday and arrested the accused, Vijaya Kumar.

“We have recorded the victim’s statement. Her medical examination report would be available in three days. She didn’t reveal the incident, apparently under pressure from her relatives who felt it would embarrass the family. They did not give any medical aid to the old woman,” said SP Ajitha Beegam. Kumar and the victim were reportedly locked in a dispute. “We will look into every aspect,” the SP said.

The victim told reporters that Kumar entered her house through the backdoor. “I pleaded with him, but he abused me at knifepoint,” she said. Kadakkal village panchayat member Mini Mol, said: “I asked her to file a police complaint. She said her relatives would do what was required. The relatives, however, did not inform police. Someone alerted the media and the incident came to the fore.” Mol said the victim was abandoned by her husband decades ago and does not have children.
