The ruling CPM on Friday initiated action against two party leaders facing various charges. In Ernakulam, the party removed area secretary Sakkir Hussain, an accused in a case of a businessman’s abduction. Hussain, a CPM district committee member, has over a dozen criminal cases against him.

Last week, when the government announced a drive against goons, a case under the anti-goons Act was filed against Hussain. The government opposed his anticipatory bail plea on Friday.

The CPM also decided to sack municipal councillor P N Jayanthan, who has been accused by a woman of raping her two years ago.

She alleged that Jayanthan and three others raped her and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident. The government told the Assembly that it would not protect those involved in the alleged gangrape.
