The Army Sunday foiled three attempts by militants to infiltrate into the Kashmir Valley. While the Army pushed back the militants in two sectors of the Valley, they killed four militants trying to cross-over into Kashmir through the Nowgam sector.

“There were three (infiltration) bids. In Nowgam sector, four terrorists were killed…In other two (infiltration) bids at Tangdhar and Gurez, the militants were pushed back,” Defence spokesman Lt Col N N Joshi told The Indian Express.

The Army said that the soldiers guarding the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam sector of frontier Kupwara district, on Sunday, noticed some movement by a group of militants and challenged them. The militants opened fire triggering an encounter in which four militants were killed.

In the same district, militants also tried to sneak into the Valley through the Tangdhar sector. The Army said that the militants were challenged and were pushed back by the soldiers.

The militants, Army added, made another attempt to enter Kashmir through Gurez sector in Bandipore. However, as the Army spotted the militants, they challenged them and the militants returned back.

Lt Col Joshi said that all the four militants who tried to cross over through Nowgam sector have been killed. “The operations are over,” he said.

While the massive street protests continue in the Valley since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8, there has been a steep increase in the militant attempts to infiltrate into Kashmir Valley in the last two months. Police sources said that while Army foiled several militants attempts to cross over, a large number of militants have managed to enter the Valley in north Kashmir especially from frontier Kupwara district.

Police sources say that these militants are stationed in several parts of north Kashmir and would try to spread out to other parts of the Valley especially south Kashmir, the epicenter of current protests.

In recent weeks, militants have shown their presence in the Valley and attacked convoys of the Army and the BSF especially in north Kashmir.

On July 24, a soldier was killed along the LoC in Kupwara when Army prevented militants from infiltrating into Kashmir. A week later on July 31, two soldiers and two militants were killed when army foiled another infiltration bid in Nowgam sector of Kupwara.

On August 16, militants, in a Faidayeen attack, killed a CRPF commandant in Srinagar’s old city. A day later, militants ambushed an Army convoy at Baramulla in north Kashmir killing two soldiers and a policeman. Three days later, militants attacked a BSF camp in border region of Tangdhar in Kupwara wounding three personnel. Last week, on September 7, militants ambushed an Army convoy in north Kashmir’s Handwara wounding three soldiers.
