Karur youth’s murder a case of honour killing, say cops

Police said they had received a call from a person who claimed that he killed Suresh Arockiasamy for marrying his sister and bringing shame upon their family.

Police have said the murder of a youth at a liquor shop in Karur on Saturday night is a case of honour killing. Police said they had received a call from a person who claimed that he killed Suresh Arockiasamy for marrying his sister and bringing shame upon their family. The caller hung up after promising that he would surrender soon, said police.

Arockiasamy was hacked to death at a government run-liquor shop. “He came in a car with a ‘Press’ sticker on it. As he was drinking, some people arrived on a motorcycle and attacked him,” said a senior police officer.

An officer probing the case said Arockiasamy belonged to the Asari sub-caste, who are traditional carpenters. He had married a girl from the Muthuraja caste, traditionally land-owners. “The two had eloped, but the parents of the girl brought her back. They claimed that the two did not marry legally. After she was taken back to her home, Arockiasamy moved a Habeas Corpus petition in Madras high court. There, she chose to go with her parents. We are told that Arockiasamy was murdered after she told her family that she wanted to go back to him. The prime suspect is her brother Sivaneshan. We have information that the murder was executed by him and his associates,” he said.

The office of Karur SP Vandita Pandey said no arrests have been made so far.
