A 19-year-old youth has been arrested and a minor detained for allegedly killing their 10-year-old hostel mate in a private hostel in Ghatshila police station area of Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district.

Police have also arrested Masidas Minj and his wife Sarita Minj, who ran the hostel, for allegedly not taking any action against the main accused despite being aware of his actions. The arrests were made on Friday.

According to police, Ramchandra Giri, a resident of Khejuria village in Chakulia, was found dead on June 26 on the terrace of the two-storey Bethany Hostel.

Police suspected Birbal Soren, a Class X student, after students in the hostel reportedly told them that he was among the eldest boarders and would bully them. According to police, the students also accused Birbal of sexually abusing some of the junior students.

“That night, Birbal was sexually abusing a Class V student aged 13 when Ramchandra spotted him. Worried that he would be exposed, Birbal, with the help of the Class V student, forcibly took Ramchandra to the roof. There, he repeatedly hit him on the head with a stone. After Ramchandra died, both the boys returned to their beds and slept,” said a police officer. He added that Birbal had been allegedly abusing the minor accused for the past two years.

Before returning to bed, Birbal reportedly wiped the blood off his hands with a ‘gamchha’. He washed it and threw it outside the hostel. Police have recovered it. “That is a crucial piece of evidence,” said SP (rural) Mohammad Arshi.

“Girls too stayed at the hostel, but we have not received a complaint from any girl so far. As of now, the hostel has been closed.”
