A 55-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by his fellow villagers, who suspected him of practicing witchcraft, in Jharkhand’s Lohardaga district on Monday. The police have registered an FIR but no arrests have been made so far.

According to the police, the residents of Nagri village suspected his fellow resident Savna Oraon of being involved in witchcraft. “On Monday, one Mahadev Oraon, also from the same village, had gone to take bath at a well near his house.

He fell in it and died. It has been revealed that he was drunk at the time. The villagers, who were already suspecting Savna of practicing witchcraft, spotted him near Mahadev’s house. Almost immediately, the villagers gathered there and accused him of being responsible for Mahadev’s death. It was decided that he ought to be taught a lesson,” said Jai Prakash, Officer-in-charge (Bhandra).

Savna’s children tried hard to prevent the mob but could not stop them. “Savna died on the spot due to the beating. We received the information after that. An FIR has been registered against seven identified persons and around 40 unidentified people. Further investigations are on,” said the officer.
