The Jharkhand government Thursday appointed economist and columnist Surjit S Bhalla and All Jharkhand Students’ Union (AJSU) president Sudesh Mahato as vice-chairmen of the State Development Council (SDC). AJSU is an alliance partner of the BJP in the state government.

Bhalla and Mahato will be given the rank of minister. The SDC is headed by the Chief Minister.

Bhalla is an Indian Express columnist and senior India analyst with the Observatory Group, a New York-based macro policy advisory group. He also appears on panels of various news channels for discussions on economics and politics.

The Jharkhand government had envisaged the SDC in the beginning of 2015. Cabinet approval was given in July 2015. However, the council is yet to hold its first meeting.
