Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced a ‘Pongal Gift Pack’, including Rs 100 cash, for 1.91 crore families in the state ahead of Pongal, the harvest festival on January 15. The total cost of this scheme will be Rs 318 crore.
On Wednesday morning, the CM announced that all ration card and police card holders as well as Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in the state camps would benefit from this.
The gift pack comprises 1 kg rice and sugar each, two pieces of two-feet sugarcane, which is an essential part of Pongal festival, and Rs 100 cash. The gift pack will be distributed through public distribution shops.
Last week, Jayalalithaa had launched ‘Amma Seeds’ for farmers, a scheme which was announced in the state assembly in 2014.
According to the government, the Tamil Nadu State Seeds Development Agency will act as the nodal body for this scheme and has allocated a sum of Rs 5.37 crore for urban citizens to grow vegetables at home in two districts.
The government said the certified ‘Amma Seeds’ would be made available to farmers through ‘Amma Service Centres’ across the state for ensuring quality seeds.
