Militants open fired on the security forces in Nowhatta area of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday morning as India celebrates its 70th Independence Day. Three militants are currently hiding in a building close to the Jama Masjid of Nowhatta.

Five security personnel including one police officer were injured in the militant attack. Security forces have cordoned off the area and a gunbattle is underway. The attack came even as the city was turned into a virtual fortress on the eve of the Independence Day.

Restrictions and curfew were however, imposed in the state for last 38 days following the killing of Hizibul commander Burhan Wani.
