THREE TEACHERS’ organisations, serving on contract, blocked the main Jalandhar city at three points, BSF Chowk, BMC overbridge and Ladowali Road, on Sunday, demanding regularisation of service. As the entire city was choked and massive traffic jams threw life out of gear, computer teachers’ union, too, protested near Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences.
Members of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA/SSA) Teachers Union, Computer Teachers Union and Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur EGS AIE STR Teachers Union staged protests across the state. Earlier, hundreds of teachers gathered at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall today morning to discuss their demands and future course of action to mount pressure on the government. Then, they marched towards BMC Chowk’s overbridge where they blocked traffic and all efforts of the police to clear the jam failed.
The teachers’ unions said though they have been serving since 2003, they have not been regularised despite the fact that three teachers have laid down their lives. They said though they had already held meetings with Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal on September 26 and October 17, when he had promised to issue a notification within 15 days, that is yet to happen.
