DAYS AFTER a man in Mansa was killed allegedly by members of a liquor mafia, another man was murdered, this time in Jalandhar, for reportedly objecting to illegal sale of liquor in his locality.

Munish, a property dealer, was the only son of his parents. He was to marry in January next year. His father is a Junior Engineer (JE) posted in the Powercom department.
The accused had allegedly attacked Munish with sharp weapons around 11.30 pm Wednesday when they spotted him alone near his residence.
Out of six, police have named three assailants Ujagar Singh, his son Gaurav and their accomplice Pawan Kumar in the FIR registered on charges of murder. Three others were yet unidentified.
Inspector Jeewan Singh, Station House Officer, Police Station, Division No. 5, said, “In the past also, a number of cases were registered against Ujagar Singh and Gaurav on charges of illegal sale of liquor. Since the Excise department deals with such cases, we learnt that both Ujagar and Gaurav were fined a number of times for illegal sale of liquor”.
Munish’s friend Amit Kumar told The Indian Express that the accused were not only involved in illegal sale of liquor in the area but were also harassing women. Since Munish used to object it, they were looking for an opportunity to get him out of their way.
Munish’s father Raj Kumar said, “Munish had stepped out of home for a walk. I saw him being attacked by Ujagar Singh, his son Gaurav, Ujagar’s brother-in-law Pawan Kumar and three others. I raised an alarm and tried to save Munish. The assailants fled from the spot leaving Munish profusely bleeding on the spot. I rushed him to civil hospital around midnight. Since Munish sustained grievous stab injuries in his abdomen, we shifted him to a private hospital. He succumbed to his injuries this morning.”
Raj Kumar added that late last evening also, the accused were selling liquor in the area to which Munish objected. “He warned them that he would report it to the police if they did not stop. Then late in the night, they found him alone and attacked him,” Raj Kumar said.
Evading queries about the alleged illegal liquor sale in the area, ACP Jalandhar (west) DS Butter said, “We are investigating the matter”.
Punjab Congress today strongly condemned Munish’s murder and accused Parkash Singh Badal led SAD-BJP government for failing to curb the increasing instances of heinous crime across the state.
In a joint statement issued here today, Jalandhar District Congress Committee (Urban) president Rajinder Berry, Jalandhar DCC (Rural) president Jagbir Brar, PPCC state vice-president and general secretary Avtar Henry said, “Just the day before yesterday, a dalit man, Sukhchain Singh was brutally murdered in Mansa. And now, another man, 28-yr-old Manish Luthra has been done to death by a group of assailants from the liquor mafia in Jalandhar. Growing incidence of heinous crimes in Punjab reflected the fact that criminals have no fear of the law and have a free run of the state”.
