Indian Railways is coming up with a new, state-of-the-art train which will have a glass ceiling and an infotainment centre to make the journey more enjoyable.

“The basic objective behind such a project is to promote tourism and woo upscale tourists from both India and abroad,” Dr A K Manocha, IRCTC Chairman and Managing Director said. The construction of the coaches started in 2015, which are designed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Perumbur.

“The first such coach is all set to roll out this month (October) itself,” said Dham Ghaj Prasad, Group General Manager (Infrastructure), IRCTC. Another three coaches will be rolled out in December this year.

“The first coach will be tagged in a regular train in the Kashmir Valley while the other two will be part of some train careening through the picturesque Araku Valley (K K Line, Waltair station) on the South-Eastern Railway,” Manocha said. “There are some trains with glass ceiling in foreign countries, like Switzerland, which enjoy the patronage of tourists. We believe such coaches would also give a fillip to rail tourism in India,” he added. He also said that other trains having coaches with aerial view will be decided later.

The manufacturing cost of a single coach is Rs 4 crore, “The coaches will be ultra luxurious with rotatable chairs to provide the passengers an aerial view through partly glass ceiling,” describing the interiors of the train. He further said that the coaches will have large leg room for a comfortable journey.

Let's not discourage positive developments. Of course clean toilets are needed. Meanwhile can the citizens start depositing trash in designated bins and co-operating with the helpers in chanalizing general hygiene.

My first impression was that this coach will be put in regular trains and thought of journey in summer. How a Delhi to Chennai trip in May -June will be in such a coach?

Good kickback from Saint Gobain and other gl manufacturers I am sure to MD. Else its most stupid idea where railways priorities should be for people comfort. Let the MD travel in sleeper cl for 8 hours in berth 4 to 8 and enjoy the experience, with stink and beds that are bare boards. They now want to provide gl roofs for these pengers to enjoy sunshine in a sun rich country like India. lt;br/gt;Look at the buses with there roofing in Bangalore which are now covered with ads to protect pengers from scorching sun

What we need are clear stations and trains; punctual arrival/departure; and tracks that prevent trains from careening. Instead what is being proposed are gimmicks.

Priority should be to increase average speed of all trains. Presently it is poor which should be minimum 50 kms per hour.

A highly visible example of misplaced priorities of Railways leading to waste of resources. Can bet that this was to "help" some contractors. Please remember that India is a sunny and hot country unlike the "west" where the idea is blindly copied from. Pretty sure that this coach will not "last" and repay back for the development cost which must be around 40 crores. Talk about sqeezing money for universities - this is the worst example possible, possibly a 100 fold worse than money in JNU.

Gr8 effort. You really change the railway. What development was done in rail for last 20 years, you have done more within 3 years. All the best...

I could say, it's a stupidly to spend 4 crore for a single coach! What's the necessity of rotating chairs here? First make basic infrastructure better in the sense, maintaining clean coach n stations, check on intruders, safety to pengers n their belongings. Though nowadays Indian Railway is with a right person, which I feel. But I think this project is exaggerated in terms of cost.

First can we have toilets in trains that don't flush everything onto the rails please. Some of this country's priorities are breathtaking, to say the least.lt;br/gt;.

Just and first give these 3 basic essentials:lt;br/gt;1) cleanlinesslt;br/gt;2) security safetylt;br/gt;3) timeliness..lt;br/gt;We need this, not bullet trains and all these show-off. Even this train wld start stinking if these 3 basic points r not met.

😂😂😂made my day. Hilarious comment. Yet he said correct thing for some extent. People make it dirty as they hav nil sense here. But yet railways have least efforts on cleanliness. You will hardly find staffs cleaning the compartments in the running train or some station. Indian railways has failed there.
