Making an all out effort to enhance the green cover along the tracks, Indian Railway has firmed up an ambitious proposal to plant 5 crore saplings ahead of the onset of monsoon on land owned by it.

We will undertake a massive tree plantation drive on rail land across the country before the onset of monsoon, said a senior official in the Environment Directorate of Railway Ministry.

Railways has created a separate directorate to carry out environment-related activities in a focused manner.

“We are finalising the varieties of trees such as neem, pilkhan, jamun to be planted on rail land including on both sides of the tracks. The saplings will be region-specific and vary from zone to zone,” said the official.

He said it would be ensured that branches of the trees do not block the tracks.

Railways will be joined by Environment Ministry and state governments in the green drive.

We will sign an MoU with the Environment Ministry to carry out the plantation exercise, he said.

Besides, railways will also rope in NGOs in the country-wide exercise. There are many NGOs which are involved in social forestry and their services will be enlisted by the public transporter.

Our aim is to go ahead with the plantation at a fast pace before the monsoon so that rain will allow the saplings to grow quickly, he said.

The land where trees will be planted will remain with railways while the maintenance of trees will be a joint effort of railways, Environment Ministry and state governments.

The official said the tree plantation drive will serve dual purpose. “While the plantation is an environment-friendly exercise, trees will also prevent encroachment of rail land.”

The public sector behemoth has launched a string of green initiatives in the recent past including water conservation, generating solar and wind power and using LED bulbs among others.

The railways is setting up automatic coach washing plants all rail depots to minimise the use of water for cleaning trains.

In the wake of water scarcity being faced be several states, railways has already launched a drive to protect and revive all water bodies on land owned by it.

Sir, lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;I wrote to Rail Minister last on 9th February 2016 which is as follows -lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;"“ Briksha Mitra Yojana “ lt;br/gt;It is well known to all of us that Indian Railway is having track of over 65,000 route Km in Indian Territory. Sir, if we fence / border all the Railway area of this elongated track by local fruit trees at a distance of abt 25 / 50 mtrs in both the sides of track, we can plant about (65,000 x 20 x 2 = 26,00,000) trees, throughout the country only in Indian Railway area. The Railway and Forest Ministry may coordinate in this regard. In case, availability of 26,00,000 plant is not possible in one single year, Rly can take up the matter in phased manner for the next five years. And after the trees are grown up, in turn, the Railway can auction the fruits for additional income. Also, the Railway can create job of around additional 7500 persons (purely on contract basis @ Rs.10,000/- pm) to be posted at every stations who will look after the trees for the next 5/10 years. The expenditure can mutually be borne by both Rly and Forest ministries @ 50:50. " - and the work started. lt;br/gt;lt;br/gt;Yesterday (01 MAY 16) it was confirmed on Twitter at 5 PM by the Ministry of Railways. I am thankful to the Ministry of Railway and hope to convince the world on the same line to fight against Global Warming. If I am successful, we will be able to create 2/3 more Amazon Forest throughout the world.

Good start. I have been writing it for few years. Even wrote to the Railway Minister. Suggested for evolving a different model. I think that is still relevant. The w work should be done in an experimental manner to evolve different models. Successful models could be introduced with much importance later on. I too have a proposal to offer. Wish to get involved with this great work.

A very very good step. But it must be ensure that fruit bearing trees like Mango, Jackfruit, Ber, Jamun and useful trees like Banyan, Peepul and neem find place in abundance.
