India, Pakistan may temporarily recall their envoys: Report

The fresh slide in ties may also lead to a 'scaling down' of the strength of diplomatic staff by the two neighbours, the report said.

Signalling a fresh slide in ties, Pakistan and India may temporarily recall their high commissioners and scale down the size of diplomatic staff in each other’s missions in the wake of the latest diplomatic spat over the spying episode, a media report said on Friday. The latest spat started last week after a staff member of Pakistan’s High Commission in New Delhi was detained by police for questioning over espionage charges, the Express Tribune reported.

The fresh slide in ties may also lead to a ‘scaling down’ of the strength of diplomatic staff by the two neighbours, the paper said. The tension intensified after tit-fit-tat naming of diplomatic staff for alleged spy work by both sides. Mahmood Akhtar, who was working as a visa officer at the Pakistani High Commission, was later expelled from India.

“However, India, using a statement Delhi police extracted from Akhtar through coercive means, implicated other Pakistani staffers. The identities of at least six such officials were leaked to the media, jeopardising their security. The move prompted Pakistan to withdraw them from New Delhi,” it said.

In what appeared to be a tit-for-tat move, Pakistan on Thursday claimed that eight officials posted in India’s High Commission in Islamabad were agents of RAW and IB. The disclosure left New Delhi with no other options but to withdraw the named officials, the paper said.

An official with knowledge of latest developments said that India had breached an ‘understanding’ by revealing the identities of certain Pakistani officials posted in New Delhi, the paper said.

The official said both sides knew that certain officials worked under cover and they did so with the full official knowledge, it said.

“What India did was unthinkable,” the official added, saying the Indian move would have serious implications for the two countries.

He said the immediate fallout of this controversy could be the recalling of high commissioners by the two countries for the time being, the paper said.

The official said another implication might be ‘cutting down’ the size of diplomatic staff posted in each other’s countries till the situation normalised, it added.

In the interest stan and India, Abdul Basit stan High Commission in India should have been recalled by stan Govt itself long back when Nawaz Sharif PM is so friendly with India or India should have asked him to leave India long back.He has already spoiled stan's relation with India by his anti-India activities in India by instigating Separatists in Kashmir Valley. His stay in Delhi helped ISI than stani Govt. In Past no any stan High Commissioner had done so harm to our relation with stan than what he has done so far. At Present relation between both countries has reached the point of no return.Let us hope for better relation with stan if stan Govt replaces Abdul Basit with honest person.

I am sorry, missed that rather smartly phrased idea completely. You want India to conduct their cold start on China? But there is no infiltration from there, as far as I know. So, what's your point?

Perfect, scale things down to the bare minimum. I think there should be a precedence - run your mouth directionlessly blaming another country, experience diplomatic curbs as a result. Think very hard when running your mouth against another country, at UN or wherever! And all the best meeting Hurriyat! Have a swell in that God forsaken den of global terrorists.

Sure, but seriously, it's getting super irritating. I am all for banning RSS - but you do not have to squeeze this in all the time. It's like talking to stan - you say nice day today, right? And the guy replies Kashmir. You ask him if the market is open, he replies Kashmir - so really, this is how you appear.

Thank you Sir, but did I not begin with "Things are unfolding faster?" Why you give 5 years to take the drive to the peak ? If it is 5 years, then what is the point in doing it ? Many thought by surgical strike we taught them a lesson. And where we stand today ? We are withdrawing from all diplomatic bonds and proceeding to ... I don't know if they have mutually decided on a date and time.

Things are unfolding faster, but on the expected line. In both the countries, political leadership in power need to divert public mind from failures of their respective governments. Pseudo Patriotism and desire to punish unfriendly neighbor is the best medicine prescribed in such situations. Eventually it should culminate in a 'war' in which both the sides would claim victory, in spite of heavy losses. Let us wait and watch.

Good news! Now we don't need to feed the traitors, spies and terrorists. Also we will have no pressure from peace-mongers. When there needs to be two people for peace, we have one nation which is rogue viz. stan and the other side doesn't want trouble, but the rogue one is controlled by psychotic people in the military uniform putting India in offensive mode. Better follow the defensive offense of Ajit Doval to ensure Pak. is put into trouble.

Saab - In India there can be minor scuffles between people. Riots happen because of pion towards religion dominating common sense. Wish people accept all faiths and move on and i am biased and feel Muslims have a problem in accepting all faiths are true. Muslims need not accept all faiths are true, at least not demean other faiths without mocking deity worship, etc. which we have been doing time immemorial and has sense.

Kick Basit out first and recall our High Commissioner from Pak immediately. India should declare Basit a terrorist sponsor and other employees as spies. All spies names be well advertised. Pak will never change it's arrogant way and will continue to sponsor terrorism against India. Chinese are supporting s and supplying all the ammunition it needs to counter India.

INDIA should withdraw the MFN status she gave unilaterally to stan. stan has not reciprocated it in 20 years. So, good reason for India to withdraw it.

India has nothing to lose in this recall of envoys. stan will lose more. Since Pathankot, stan's Army and ISI have inaugurated a new chapter in Pak's relations with India. Uri was a continuation of that. Poor Nawaz Shariff had tried peaceful policy but the more he tried to implement it, the greater the attacks on India by the Pak. Army and their "pet terrorists", LeT and JeM.
