Assam government’s Social Welfare Department would stress on strict implementation of “The Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986” in the state.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child development has desired that the Act be strictly implemented and the state government would take adequate measures to ensure the same, an official release said in Guwahati on Tuesday.

The Act was enacted on in 1986 with the specific objective of prohibiting indecent representation of women through advertisement, publication, writing and painting or in any other manner. It defines “indecent representation of women” to mean depiction of the figure/form/body/any part thereof of a woman which is indecent or derogatory to or denigrating women or is likely to injure public morality.

It prohibits such representation in any form in any advertisement, publication, etc and also prohibits selling, distribution, circulation of any books, pamphlets, and such other material containing indecent representation of women.

An offender will face a two-year jail term and fine upto Rs 2000 on first conviction, the release added.
