The Congress Monday accused the BJP government of launching “a reign of tax terrorism across the country” in the name of unearthing black money through the income disclosure scheme.

The BJP government, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari said, ran an amnesty scheme last year for disclosure of black money deposits. The total tax collection under the scheme this year has been around Rs 4,000 crore whereas the government had set a target of Rs 40,000-50,000 crore, he said.

“What has happened as a result of this failure is that the NDA government has launched a reign of tax terrorism across the country… There are these horror stories of how the small trader, small businessman, the honest tax payer is being literally coerced in order to make declarations to fulfil the targets…And the big fish…the oligarchs, the crony capitalists, their suit-boot friends are enjoying,” Tewari said.
