IIT Guwahati post-grad student commits suicide

Police said some students of a hostel in the IIT campus in North Guwahati here saw Alam hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at around 10:30 pm on Saturday.

A post-graduate student of IIT-Guwahati student allegedly committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room late Friday night, police here said. Sarkar Intekhab Alam, who hailed from Murshidabad in West Bengal, and was pursuing a post-graduate degree in physics, was supposed to take his first semester examination from Saturday.

Police said some students of a hostel in the IIT campus in North Guwahati here saw Alam hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at around 10:30 pm on Saturday. On receiving information, police rushed him to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him as brought dead, a police officer said.

While a post-mortem examination of the body was carried out on Saturday, police also said it appeared to be prima facie a case of suicide.
