IAF on Saturday said that timely intelligence and prompt action has foiled the likely plan of terrorists to destroy its valuable assets at the Pathankot air base.

The Pathankot IAF facility, located about 40 kms away from the border with Pakistan, is the base of MiG-21 fighter planes and Mi-25 attack helicopters of Air Force.

In a statement issued nearly 15 hours after a group of heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists stormed the air base, leading to a fierce gun battle in which three security personnel were killed along with four attackers, the air force said they had intelligence that such an attack would take place.

“Intelligence inputs had been available of a likely attempt by terrorists to infiltrate into the military installation in Pathankot area. In response, preparatory actions had been taken by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to thwart any such attempt,” it said.

IAF added that due to the effective preparation and coordinated efforts by all the security agencies a group of terrorists were detected by the aerial surveillance platforms as soon as they entered the Air Force Station at Pathankot.

“The infiltrators were immediately engaged and contained within a limited area, thus preventing them from entering the Technical zone where high value assets are parked.

“Through timely and prompt action by all agencies, the likely plan of the terrorists to destroy valuable assets of the Air Force has been foiled,” it said.

Neutralize the Terrorist vocational training and rehabilitation center which are based across the border in stan. Even stan government may also secretly thank the Indian government. Something's which are beyond their control are taken care by another bordering Country.

Intelligence has been available !!! Since when ? In-spite of such early intelligence, someone has been allowed to enter an Air Force Base !!! That's a Base, where you all stay(first), be prepared to guard it (second).... (it seems like I could have given you more ideas on how to have been prepared in guarding it) Why are we reacting at the end ... !!! When are we going to act before ??? In-spite of such advanced intelligence, we have reacted and not acted in advance !!! When are we going to see the light at the end of the tunnel...(we could have acted in advance ...) What are we missing here...!!! Have we learned from the past and have we improved upon it...!!!

Thank God. Terrorists were not successful. But something is troubling. One soldier died for each terrorist. If intel is there, how did they enter? Why police fail? Recent Akali govt policy is playing with fire to stroke terrorism by invoking old fires.

it is a bad claim. People do not write much because they do not want to demoralize the security forces. Questions to be asked, why surveillance and OP posts did not work well. What happened to the search lights around the compounds. There is no doubt that there was a serious collapse of security. It is time for Defence Installations to have a fool proof check on approaching vehicles and individuals. Irrespective of whatever tall claims made, the world is laughing at this incident. Similarly, it is necessary to introduce a special security system for sensitive locations. There should be no free access to the locations for own employees. They should be picked up and dropped in closed vehicles and return to the collecting zone in the same manner. How an Airman was able to have clified information about the installations and equipments? NSA should form a special committee to study the security of important defense and security installations across India, immediately. Likewise, questions needs to be raised, how secure is our border !! How did the terrorists crossed over from the border. That shows, our Sea and Land borders are not safe and we need to know, what the situation of Air Traffics. So, rather than making tall claims, set things right immediately.
