Dalit student suicide: ABVP leader claimed stomach pain after ‘assault,’ was operated for appendicitis

Last August, ABVP leader Nandanam Susheel Kumar alleged he was assaulted by members of the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) in his hostel room. But the report of Archana Hospital in Madinaguda states he was operated upon for acute appendicitis on August 7.

Question marks are being raised about the alleged assault of an ABVP leader at the centre of the row over the suspension of five Dalit students, including Rohith Vemula who committed suicide last Sunday, at the University of Hyderabad.

Last August, ABVP leader Nandanam Susheel Kumar alleged he was assaulted by members of the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) in his hostel room. But the report of Archana Hospital in Madinaguda where he was admitted by his brother Vishnu Kumar on August 4 “with alleged history of assault” states he was operated upon for acute appendicitis on August 7.

Dr Anupama Rao, Senior Medical Officer of the University of Hyderabad who, along with then Vice Chancellor R P Sharma, visited Susheel Kumar on

August 8 — a day after the surgery — told The Indian Express Tuesday: “After collecting all the medical reports of Susheel Kumar and examining them, I could not reach the conclusion that he developed appendicitis due to the alleged assault. There was one line that there was a bruise on his left shoulder. I could not say if he was allegedly punched or beaten up. I did not examine him as he did not come to me and the hospital’s report does not mention that he had any external or visible injury.”

According to Dr Rao, the resident doctor and general physician at the hospital said they could not conclusively establish if the appendicitis deteriorated after Susheel Kumar was allegedly punched.

Dr Chenna Reddy, general physician at the Archana Hospital, said in his report: “26-year-old male admitted with alleged history of assault at 2.30 am on August 4. Complains of pain in abdomen and SOB (shortness of breath). Patient managed conservatively for two days in hospital. Suddenly, patient complained of severe abdomen pain in right iliac fossa with history of loose stool.

USG abdomen taken on August 7 show acute appendicitis. PAC and surgical profile done, patient taken up for surgery. Diagnostic Lap and Appendectomy done under GA on August 7. Patient improved well and discharged with stable vitals.”

Dr Rao said the first question she asked Susheel Kumar was why he did not go to the 24×7 University Health Centre if he was feeling unwell after being allegedly punched in the abdomen.

“I asked him that question as it was past midnight when the incident happened and the nearest hospital was the campus health centre. He said that the ASA students did not allow him to go towards the health centre. He also said that fearing another assault, he had fled outside the campus from where he called his brother who came to pick him up and admit to hospital,” Dr Rao said.

“That night may be he felt unwell after the incident that is why he had to visit the hospital. Hospital records also show he complained of nausea, difficulty in breathing, and abdomen pain when he was admitted. Much later, we came to know that he also had appendicitis,” she said.

Duty Security Officer (DSO) Dilip Singh, who was the first to reach Susheel’s hostel room that night after receiving a call, said in his report that when he reached the spot, he saw ASA cadres and Susheel Kumar in a discussion.

“I did not see ASA members beating Susheel. At least it did not happen in front of me. Susheel agreed to give an apology letter and also apologise on FB (Facebook). We all proceeded to the security office where the matter could be settled. When Susheel was in the security jeep, some ASA members tried to pull him out during which the bruise on his left shoulder may have occurred and his shirt was torn,” Singh said.

Based on the reports by Dr Rao and Singh, the proctorial board first recommended that five students of ASA, including Rohith Vemula, be given strict warning not to indulge in such behaviour, and a warning to Susheel Kumar to desist from posting inflammatory comments.

On August 3,1 the proctorial board changed its stand and, based on Dr Rao’s report and statement of Susheel Kumar, it recommended suspension of Rohith Vemula, Dontha Prashanth, P Vijay Kumar, Sheshu Chemudugunta, and Velmula Sunkanna.

What could be worse - a potential appendicitis burst due to physical ault Appendicitis shouldn't be underestimated. The fluid that spreads after it is burst infects a variety of internal organs. It can be fatal. A friend almost died of this infection. And this is in advanced care of UK

Many of us have been college educated. All of us know there are students who are focussed on the purpose they have joined the college. They are not swa by others who get into bad habits or swa by politics. This person who committed suicide was definitely not a focussed student. He went into politics and did not know how to extricate himself from it. Students who now protest and stoop to violence need to ponder. Rahul hi is playing politics as usual. Do the students want to listen to his stupidity or follow their pursuit in education? Take a call.

Why should one Dalit student be removed from hostel?was he involved in a brawl? Do students come to study or play politics.? What has education thought him to be coward and commit suicide? I am not taking sides. But fact of the matter is that in most universities students do only politics instead of concentrating on their studies.shame on them wasting time and money

Agree! Modi is behind all this. Looks like this modi govt is responsible for all atrocities on Dalits and underprevilged and minorities. All these headlines appeared in Congress rule too but never questioned central govt..it was either state or administration or temple trustees. This time media is indirectly and directly pointing fingers at modi and his ministers. So all these English media have made me believe that it is really modi who is behind this. What strikes me is the similarity in covering certain issues and skipping certain ones by the media. Do these guys call each other before deciding on headlines? My only question is Why is so much similarity in covering certain issues ?

So physically aulting a student in the middle of night threatening him and forcing him to apologise for his views has become an example of tolerant behavior for secular intellectuals. We should welcome this and treat them to same tolerant behavior. Any action against such tolerant way of expressing dissent should be termed as crushing freedom of speech

Its unfortunate that we indulge politics even on serious matters of social integration and national unity, without realising the amount of damage that is being done to social fabric and human development in the country. Its a fact that the deceased had attacked another student leader, who had to be admitted to the Hospital, notwithstanding the patient was simultaneously diagnosed for appendicitis as well. The deceasaed had no business to take law into his own hands and create hiccups in the university. Obviously it was being done on account of competing interest for space in politics. There was nothing wrong either in the Manister taking cognisance by writing to the concerned ministry for action and the concerned ministry taking follow up action. The suicide is unfortunate, but the University or the Governement cannot be blamed for action, which they are supposed to in the course of their business. The role of media is always questionable as it has no longer remained independent, and has its own axe to grind. The media is as bad as any political person or party for that matter.

Another selective media reporting. Agreed that the hospital report does not say external injuries. But is the reporter an expert doctor to clearly say that there would not have been any internal injuries which could have precipitated the appendicitis? It would have been better to leave that to doctor. Perhaps the point suited the reporter and hence made it big. If that is the case, there is a certificate available on net where in it clearly states that the brother ofthe deceased belongs to backward caste. Why is the media not reporting that? Even his g mother claims she is not from SC but OBC! If this is true then the w drama of media and politicos about dalit murder falls flat just like various exaggerated reporting of Church Attacks in Delhi, Beef murder in Dadri and so son. The media of late hypes only such news through which it can try and settle scores with the centre and in particular Modi and second on hit list is Smriti. This cannot get more shameful. If objective news reporting should have been the case, then the media would have objectively reported that a death has happened in an University where there is a clear case of being boycotted and hence, the University and the VC need to answer the public. No doubt. Its a common practice that when Ministers make references, they are taken seriously and a prompt follow up is taken. Directing to act does not mean that to act in favour of the minister or a particular body. Such errors of commission need not be condoned and strict action needs to be taken. It would have been better had the news been reported as a student death instead of dalit death!
