The man who allegedly raped and bludgeoned to death a 10-year-old girl in Hyderabad on Saturday had been arrested and jailed last year for trying to strangulate a sex worker in neighbouring Medak district when she demanded money, the police said Monday after his arrest.

The victim at the time had managed to escape and got help, leading to the arrest of the accused, the police said, hours after the accused was arrested on Sunday night from near the tracks where he had abandoned the 10-year-old’s body. Handed a one-year rigorous imprisonment by the court in last year’s attempt to murder case, he was released on Friday.

The accused, identified as C Anil Kumar, 23, who worked as a construction worker before his arrest, took the girl to a secluded place behind the Army’s EME headquarters and raped her, the police said. He subsequently crushed her face with a boulder, and threw the body on the railway tracks nearby in a bid to make it appear like an accident, according to the police.

The body was noticed by some Army personnel passing by. They alerted the police late in Saturday night.

Inspector Sayya Maheshwar of Bolaram Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the area of crime, said Anil Kumar was found in an inebriated condition not far from where he had dumped the body.

“Based on CCTV footage available from near a toddy shop, we have reconstructed the chain of events,” Maheshwar said. “Her parents had come with the girl to the toddy shop around 3.30 pm Saturday and started drinking. Her father is a painter, and the mother a labourer. Late in the evening, Anil also arrived there and struck up a conversation with her parents.”

He subsequently began talking and playing with the girl, the inspector said. The parents have told the police that since he had become friendly with her, they did not find any reason to object when he offered to buy her chocolates and she went along with him. “All of them were heavily drunk by then,” Inspector Maheshwar said. “They panicked only when she failed to return even after half-an-hour and started looking for the girl.”

The parents told the police that they had never met Anil before.
