Himachal Pradesh Police have intercepted vehicles ferrying Rs 24 lakh in cash in Chamba. According to reports, three vehicles were intercepted at Banikhet and the cash was recovered. While one vehicle belonged to a Chamba businessman, the other was said to be from Punjab. “The occupants failed to produce valid documents to show movement of the cash was a legitimate transfer. The matter has been referred to the income tax department for investigation,” said a senior police officer.

Police have set up nakas to stop illegal movement of money from the state following demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. Meanwhile, banks remained opened in Shimla and other towns of the state, but ATMs ran dry at several places. “We spent two hours and finally managed to get cash. There was a problem at the ATM,” said Krishan Dass, a tourist from Delhi.
