The Haryana government Monday suspended four sarpanches and a panch of four gram panchayats in Fatehabad district for allegedly contesting elections on fake educational qualification certificates.

The action was taken on the basis of complaint received by Fatehabad district administration, said officials.

According to the complaint, Veerpal Kaur ( sarpanch of Pilchhian), Baljeet Kaur (sarpanch of Bhani Khera), Sonil Rani (sarpanch of Samain), Sunita (sarpanch of Bangaon) and Darshan Singh (panch of ward number 7 in Talwara) had contested elections by submitting fake educational certificates.

It is for the first time that minimum educational qualification was made mandatory to contest in the panchayat elections in Haryana.

Taking cognizance of the complaint, Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner N K Solanki had issued showcause notices to the accused and summoned them. The accused, however, could not present any concrete evidence in their defence, said officials.

The Deputy Commissioner has also directed Block Development and Panchayat Officers concerned to take charge of the movable and immovable properties of the sarpanches and hand over the charge of their panchayats to the panchs.
