The Supreme Court Friday advanced to September 9 the date of hearing of Gujarat government’s appeal against the High Court order of quashing 10 per cent reservation in the state for economically weaker sections, including Patidars, who have carried out a prolonged agitation for reservation benefits.

The Gujarat government mentioned the matter before a bench headed by CJI T S Thakur and urged it to bring ahead the date of hearing. The state said the fate of poor students from unreserved category needed to be decided so that they know whether they can avail benefits of reservation. Counselling for MBBS admissions was scheduled to end on September 30 and the appeal is listed for hearing on September 19, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Gujarat, said.
